Heaton Tennis Club Bradford Grade 4 9 & 10 April 2018

This was my first Grade 4 tournament and it had a big entry considering there were 3 other similar tournaments nearby at the same time. We were made very welcome at Heaton where the 7 indoor and outdoor acrylic as well as the 2 macadum courts were used over the two days. We will be back in August for the relaunching of the Heaton Summer Open which will be held between 6 and 9 August with the whole of the tennis club devoted to the tournament for the 4 days.

There were 9 events in two busy days of competition.

In the Mini Red tournament Alex Ingham of Bolton was the winner of the round robin group with runner up Zuzzana Walon

The 12u girls winner was Molly Robinson who came through 4-2 4-1 against Holly Huby. The consolation winner was Sophie Jackson.

The top two seeds came through the draw to compete in the final of the 12u boys with top seed Thomas Vale winning 4-0 4-1 against Mikey Maxwell. Oliver Glover won the consolation event beating Henry Brewer 4-2 2-4 10-7 in a very tight match.

Unseeded Harry Lumb won the 14u boys event winning the final 4-3(2) 4-2 against second seed Isaac Armstrong. The consolation event was won by top seed Jack Barrs beating Yash Wilson 4-0 4-1 in the final.

Top seed Asa Stanley won the final of the 16u boys event 4-0 4-1 against third seed Isaac Armstrong in a Fast4 compass draw event.

The weather turned against us again on the Tuesday so the 18u boys event was played indoors. Asa Stanley added this trophy to the 16u boys one from the day before. Asa came through a big draw to win 4-3(2) 4-1 against top seed Alexander Sadeghi. The consolation event went to Moazzam Kahut 4-2 1-4 10-9 on a sudden death tie break.

The 18u girls event was played on the same day as the women’s event and the final of both was between top seed Lucy Margetson and second seed Ellen Plaskitt. Lucy came out on top in both events in the battle of the 5.2’s. The women’s consolation was won by Nicole Gamma 4-1 4-1 against Rebecca Prayle and in the 18u Priyanka Misra won the consolation event 4-0 4-0 again against Rebecca.

The men’s event was started on the Monday evening with the final taking place Tuesday night. Irfan Khalid beating Gavin Mason 4-1 4-2. They had come together from Huddersfield, in fact they are neighbours. Irfan was lucky to get a lift home after this victory! The consolation event was won by John Spence 0-4 4-2 10-7 in a topsy turvey final against Patrick Di Maio.

Harlow Tennis Club Harrogate Grade 5 31 March 2018

The bad weather continued with heavy rain for most of the day making it impossible to play on Harlow’s outdoor courts which was a real shame as we were all looking forward to the first event at this new venue.

Fortunately we were able to secure indoor courts for most of the tournament at Chapel Allerton with just a couple of games played outdoors by a couple of brave players. Thanks to them.

There were two events. First up was the men’s open. Top seed Thomas Horsley came through to beat Adam Dixon second seed 4-1 4-2. Ennis Fearon-Taylor won the consolation event 4-2 4-0 against Leo Van.

In the 16u Boy’s event Hugh Shackleton won the event beating both first and second seeds. The score in the final against Savinien Biock 4-2 2-4 10-5 in a tight final.

Lewis Hodkin-Chell won the consolation event being another victim to an in form Hugh in the first round.

Rawdon Tennis Club Grade 5 30 March 2018

The series returned to Rawdon on 30 March. There were two events. Boys 14 and under and men’s open.

Leo Van claimed his second trophy in a week to win the 14u boys beating Emre Sen of David Lloyd Leeds 4-1 4-2. On the way to the final Emre had battled past Ashley Hunter of Northern Club Manchester 4-1 0-4 10-7 from 3-7 down in the Fast4 match tiebreak of a roller coaster of a match. Alexander Fook-Knowles was the consolation winner coming through 4-1 4-0 against Samuel Farndon.

Johnathan Cain of Macclesfield won the men’s event with the fianl score being 3-4(4) 4-3(2) 10-7 in a great final. Both players came though after riding their luck to get to the final. Daniel was 1-4 1-3 down in the quarter final when serial winner Eden Parkinson hurt his hamstring. Top seed Johnathan was 0-4 0-1 down to Callum Moore when there was a torrential shower which made the macadam courts at Rawdon very slippy and a decision was made to finish the tournament at Chapel Allerton’s all weather courts on safety grounds.

Ennis Fearnon-Taylor was the winner of the consolation draw 4-3(2) 4-3(4) over Jack Hoare of Pocklington.
