Heaton Summer Open Bradford Grade 4 6-10 August 2018

We were delighted to bring the Summer Open back to Heaton after a gap of a number of years. We were as always made very welcome and there was a good entry so its obviously popular with players and parents as well.

There was a full programme of events over four days of competition with indoor acrylic and outdoor acrylic and macadaum courts being used.

Monday was a busy day. We started with the minis indoors and 12U boys outside followed up by the girls 18U, women’s grade 4 and men’s grade 5.

The 8U mixed was less well supported than usual but we went ahead anyway and Riley Mcelnea won all of his matches to take the trophy.

In the 9U mixed we had 2 box leagues with the top 2 from each group going through to a knockout stage. The final being won by Reuben Herridge against Harrison Mcelnea 7-2 7-3 in the final.

The 12U boys was a full 16 compass draw so all boys got 4 games. There were some great matches and top seed Joseph Sweeney won the final 4-2 4-3(3) against Henry Redfearn

There were two sets of sisters in the 18U girls event with the three Elliot sisters and their brother who played in the boys 12U setting off at 6.30am for the 4 hour trip from Scotland. The other sisters were the Lucy and Charlotte Margetson. The final was won by second seed Ellen Plaskitt coming through against Zara Elliot 4-0 1-4 (10-5) in a fluctuating match.

The open women’s event followed on from the 18U and this time top seed Lucy Margetson came back to win 2-4 4-1 (10-8) against Ellie Tweddle.

The open men’s grade 5 was won by Czech player Premysl Dokoupil 4-1 4-0 against Jude Dixon

Tuesday was less busy but there was some great tennis with 12U girls and 16U boys compass draws and 15 entered in the boys event.

Unseeded Vanessa Meuller won the final 4-1 4-1 against second seed Eluned Owen.

In the boys 16U Premysl Dokoupil came through to win the final 4-0 4-0 beating the first 3 seeds along the way.

There was a rest day on Wednesday and we were back on Thursday for the 10U mixed 10U girls 18U boys and open men’s Grade 4

We had a compass draw for the 10U and Henry Redfearn followed up his runner up position in the 12U boys with a 6-3 6-2 win against Lloyd Mercer.

The girls 10U was a round robin with three girls having 3 wins and the winner Anaya Breen being decided on games for and against. It was that close there was only one game in it.

In the 18U boys event there were lots of good close matches and the final was no exception with Ennis Fearon-Taylor a 4-0 1-4 10-7 winner over top seed Andy Brisdon.

In the evening the Opens men’s grade 4 competition started with the last semis and finals being completed as planned on Friday evening. The final being between the top two seeds and James Griffin coming through 5-7 6-0 (10-1) against Jevannie Ambrose. Joshua Hunt won the consolation event against Xavier Manel-La in the final set tie break.

The weather was not so good on Friday with heavy rain showers all day. We still managed to get all the events finished thanks to Heaton allowing us to use all the indoor courts all day. Thanks to the understanding of club members as well who cancelled their bookings to allow us to complete the tournament.

There were 14U girls and boys events as well as a 16U girls.

The 14U girls was won by Lacie Parry 2-4 4-2 (10-6) against Isabella Paluzzi in yet another excellent close final. The consolation event was won by Holly Huby 4-1 4-1 against Imaan Zara Shah.

The 16U girls followed the 14U event with the final being played between the same two players as the 14U final but this time Isabella won the close first set 7-5 and then Lacy unfortunately had to retire.

The 14U boys top seed Thomas Vale came through to win the trophy against Max Marshall in the final. The consolation event was between regular Emre Sen and Abdullah Ahmed with Emre winning in the tie break 10-6
